Michigan Great Lakes Getaways: Beaches, Islands and Outdoor Adventures

Michigan may be known as the Great Lakes State, but until you stand along its shoreline, it can be hard to appreciate just how much it feels like a coastal vacation. Sandy beaches, clear blue water, waterfront towns, islands and miles of shoreline make Michigan an easy place to turn a long weekend into a much longer getaway.

Experience Lake Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes

One of the best places to start is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where towering dunes rise above Lake Michigan. The park combines beaches, forests, inland lakes and scenic overlooks, including the Lake Michigan Overlook along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. National Park Service

Nearby Traverse City makes a popular home base for exploring northwest Michigan, with restaurants, wineries, beaches and small waterfront communities all within easy reach.

Summer is perfect for beach days, boating and exploring the shoreline, while fall brings another reason to visit as the forests surrounding the lakes begin to change color.

Take a Trip to Mackinac Island

For a completely different Michigan experience, head north to Mackinac Island.

The island is known for its waterfront setting, historic architecture and slower pace. Exploring by bicycle is part of the experience, and the views across Lake Huron make even a simple ride around the island feel like part of the vacation.

It is the kind of destination where staying for a few days gives you time to explore beyond the busiest areas and enjoy the island after the day-trippers begin heading back to the mainland.

See Michigan's Wild Side at Pictured Rocks

Michigan's Upper Peninsula feels different again.

At Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, colorful sandstone cliffs rise above Lake Superior alongside beaches, waterfalls, forests and dunes. The national lakeshore stretches for more than 40 miles and includes nearly 100 miles of trails. National Park Service

One of the most memorable ways to see the cliffs is from the water. Experienced sea kayakers and guided groups can explore sections of the Lake Superior shoreline from below the towering cliffs. Because conditions on Lake Superior can change quickly, the National Park Service recommends guided trips for inexperienced paddlers. National Park Service

More Than a Summer Destination

Michigan works especially well for travelers because the experience changes with the seasons. Summer brings beaches, boating and long days near the water. Fall means colorful drives and hiking. Winter opens the door to skiing, snowshoeing and snowy cabin getaways.

That variety also makes Michigan a destination worth returning to. A summer trip along Lake Michigan can feel completely different from a fall weekend in the Upper Peninsula or a few winter days tucked away near the snow.
